Libertas Receives $60,000 from NYC Councilman Shekar Krishnan!

The Libertas Center received $60,000 in funding from Councilman Shekar Krishnan! This funding will allow Libertas to continue to provide comprehensive medical and mental health services for survivors of torture, many of whom are seeking asylum in the US. We would like to thank Councilman Shekar Krishnan and the NYC Council for supporting Libertas through the Immigrant Health Initiative and providing us with the means to continue to help survivors.

Dr. Fernando Honored with Dr. Sidney P. Grossman Distinguished Humanitarian Award by the Icahn School at Mount Sinai

Dinali Fernando, M.D., Executive Director of the Libertas Center, has been honored with the Dr. Sidney Grossman Distinguished Humanitarian Award from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). Dr. Fernando was honored for her stellar work as a clinician, her outstanding guidance as an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at ISMMS, and her integral role in transforming the Libertas Center from an ad hoc volunteer program to a full-time treatment center over the past decade and a half.

Libertas and our team are so grateful for Dr. Fernando; and we are inspired by her dedication to Libertas, her leadership, her knowledge, and her commitment to all the patients she serves. Congratulations Dinali!

Dr. Fernando Awarded 2018 National Pearl Birnbaum Hurwitz Humanism in Medicine Award

Dr. Dinali Fernando was awarded the 2018 National Pearl Birnbaum Hurwitz Humanism in Medicine Award by the Arnhold P. Gold Foundation at a reception held in Boston in October. This award is presented to a woman who exemplifies humanism and has advanced - though her scholarship, advocacy, and leadership - the well-being of vulnerable or underserved populations in the healthcare arena. She was also inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Greater New York Hospital Association features Libertas in their biannual "Behind the White Coat" Video

In July the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) featured the Libertas Center in their biannual “Behind the White Coat" video which highlights an innovative GME pro-gram at a GNYHA member hospital. It recognized Dr. Fernando’s study of Libertas patients’ out-comes with a grant from the New York State Department of Health through the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program. Dr.’s Fernando and McVane were interviewed, and it showcased the work led by Dr. Fernando which has created a remarkable learning environment for residents who train at Elmhurst.
